Rain

Constant.

The rain made a pitter patter noise against the window panes, and she briefly glanced at it before letting her attention fall back to the book in her lap.

But her mood had been spoilt, if she was being truthful. She had been longing to listen to music ever since the start of the ride, but she had forgotten her earphones back home.

Sighing at her carelessness, she returned to watching the raindrops, the book in her lap long forgotten about. It had been forlornly discarded to the side, where it now lay…dare I say it, dejectedly.

They raced down the glass on the outside, colliding with each other several times before, and increasing in speed before they abruptly fell over the edge; meeting their untimely death with the road underneath the wheels of the bus.

So absorbed she was in admiring the rain, she’d completely forgotten where she was. When the bus stopped, so did nearly her heart.

It was the stop where he would come.

The doors slid open, and people began filing in, while some got up and left. It hadn’t even been a few seconds before she spotted the chestnut-haired boy. He clambered into the aisle; his black backpack slung across his shoulder lazily. Her heart sped up a little. His hair was all rumpled up, and she couldn’t help but chuckle to herself. He looked so endearing, so cute.

He instantly spotted her, well because she sat in the same seat every day. As his honey colored orbs met her own pale grey ones, a smile lit up across his face.

“Hi Lily.” He said shyly, his face half hidden underneath his slightly damp locks.

“Hey yourself.” She replied, smiling herself. She was aware of the blush that was creeping up her cheeks, and she turned her head sideways to avoid him from seeing it.

She felt the seat beside her sink as the boy made himself comfortable. It was a long ride for him, but not quite for her. She would reach her destination after the next five stops.

Lily pretended to become lost, staring out of the glass window aimlessly, so she wouldn’t feel too awkward sitting beside him. But it seemed like fate had other plans for her today.

She felt a light tap on her shoulder after about only two minutes, and turned to face Simon, who was looking at her rather uncertainly. Upon seeing he’d piqued her interest, he hesitantly held out his hand.

A white earbud lay between the calluses of his palm, and Lily looked up at him questioningly. She had suspicions of what he was trying to ask her, of course, but she’d rather have heard him confirm it himself. She really didn’t want to land herself into an embarrassing situation with him, of all people.

“Baekhyun is playing, if you want to listen.” He whispered.

Lily’s heart practically combusted in flames. How could he possibly know what she wanted, that too at exactly the right time?

Thanking him, she took the device he offered carefully, afraid of mishandling it. She handled it as one would handle the petal of a flower, so delicately that if you were not careful it might just crumble into your hands. She grinned at him as she inserted the earbud in, letting herself relax to the melodious chords that filled her mind.

Unknowingly, she leaned across Simon’s shoulder, letting her head rest there.

This time, a deep shade of crimson bloomed across Simon’s face, tinting his soft cheeks. She’d never shown kinship with him before, and he couldn’t deny it made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

But the blush didn’t surprise him, oh no.

It was just a reminder of how, just like the rain, his heart beat for her.

Constantly.
